Stay calm and be prepared after a DUI arrest

If you are pulled over by a law enforcement officer, and your blood alcohol levels are above the legal limit or you are unable to pass a sobriety or breath test, you will almost always be arrested immediately. This is an important time because how you handle the arrest will affect your criminal record. Your record has an important impact on many aspects of your life, including your chances of employment and your ability to borrow money for college.

No one expects to be pulled over for DUI, but there are times when you do not realize how intoxicated you are before driving. This means you should always be prepared and ready with the information needed to handle a DUI successfully.

Change online settings

After you are arrested for DUI, you will want to make your social media settings private so strangers cannot be viewing the things you do. Anything you post online can be used in court against you, so changing your settings protects you.

Document information

Once the dust has settled, document the information. Why did the officer stop you? When and where were you stopped? What type of test was used to determine if you were actually drunk? Write down everything that happened during the stop, but keep the information private.

You may also want to find witnesses who saw the arrest, or those who saw you right before, after or during your stop. Find those who are willing to testify in court on your behalf because witnesses can greatly help your defense.

Always seek legal counsel

A DUI is a serious charge and likely one of the most important events you will face in your life. You should never go it alone through a legal system that is complex and complicated. If you have been arrested for DUI, we encourage you to speak to an attorney immediately.
