West Virginia sheriff facing charges for stealing drugs

On Behalf of | Jan 12, 2017 | Felonies |

A newly-elected sheriff in West Virginia has found himself on the wrong side of the law after admitting to stealing methamphetamine from the evidence room. It is alleged that he took more than $1,000 worth of evidence, most of which was meth. He said that he has been addicted to meth for more than a year.

The man was elected sheriff of Roane County in November. He will answer to the grand larceny charge in Calhoun County because the two Roane County magistrates recused themselves from this case.

The former sheriff resigned after being placed on leave last month from his job as a police officer. This was after it came to light that evidence was missing.

He was released after putting up property to satisfy a $50,000 property bond. On top of the bail, it was also ordered that he stay out of certain agencies, including the sheriff’s department and the tax office, since evidence is held in those locations.

Officials have also taken steps to start the process of having him removed from his elected position. In the interim, the former sheriff who served two terms ending in 2008 will now serve as the county’s chief deputy in charge of law enforcement operations.

As you can see, grand larceny charges can impact your entire life. This man is facing removal from his career because of using illegal means to support a drug habit. This also brings up the important point of how drug users often need help to get sober so that they aren’t tempted to take illegal action to support their habits. If you are facing any drug-related charges or other felonies, be sure to learn about your options for handling your case so that you can try to get the help you need.
